Summary

To view Wuthering Heights as a love story makes it practically unbearable to read - but to view Brontë’s work as an uncomfortable insight to the cycle of intergenerational abuse that plagues her time, and arguably even our time, is a much more exhilarating read。 The authors talent at making the reader feel just as trapped on the moors as the characters in the novel is a marvel one, and evidences why the novel is a must-read in English literature。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I had never read Wuthering Heights。 This is not an epic love story。 It's an epic story of obsession, revenge, classism, and people who are trapped in situations where the only possible resolution they have is death。 I can see where this novel would have caused quite a still when it was first published! It still caused a stir for me。 Almost no likeable characters save for Hareton, and savage behavior from almost everyone。 I may need a re-read at some point to digest it all。 Still, I need to recog I had never read Wuthering Heights。 This is not an epic love story。 It's an epic story of obsession, revenge, classism, and people who are trapped in situations where the only possible resolution they have is death。 I can see where this novel would have caused quite a still when it was first published! I don't understand why so many people have got an issue with Wuthering Heights- sometimes it's the narrations, or sometimes they think of the irrationality of a character, or its unreadability (like hell is it unreadable!) - but whatever it is, I'd just like to chuck 'em into the bin and say "Ciao-ciao"! in a devilish whisper。 I mean, it's one of the most accessible Victorian novels I've ever read, leave alone the violence and the passion。 It's nothing short of page-turning, and even as a litera I don't understand why so many people have got an issue with Wuthering Heights- sometimes it's the narrations, or sometimes they think of the irrationality of a character, or its unreadability (like hell is it unreadable!) - but whatever it is, I'd just like to chuck 'em into the bin and say "Ciao-ciao"! in a devilish whisper。 I mean, it's one of the most accessible Victorian novels I've ever read, leave alone the violence and the passion。 It's nothing short of page-turning, and even as a literary exercise, I say it augments your imagination。 This novel was built completely out of an imaginative mind, one that was literally restricted to the bounds of home and the fireplace; so 'stories' and 'folk-tales' and 'books' were all fodder to her mind, to the mind of Emily Bronte。 And coming from her pen, this story is like nothing you could've ever read。 Apart from being as involving and reader-friendly as NO other 1840s novel could ever be, Wuthering Heights compels you to be read。 I know, it's always on one of those 'To Be Read Before You Die' sort of lists; but no, it's NOT overrated。 It deserves all the fame it's got (-and maybe more)。 Granted, some of the narrative and storytelling is impractical, but do you think we're looking for realism over here?? Emily Bronte sure wasn't。 And it's in her writing, it's by her writing, that we don't look for the bounds of "reality" and "plausibility" in this story, as much as we'd search for a polar bear in the Sahara Desert。 It's, all of it, highly picturesque--you see it, you watch and feel and even walk on the landscape that is carved out in front of you。 None of that wordy ramble over here。This isn't ideally a review, I admit,- more like a rant, or a declaration (-of what?Love?-for this book??); but I'll shortly satisfy you with a summary。 Everything takes place in a surrounding that's both scenic and dismal: the Yorkshire moors。 At least, that's the way Emily thought of them when she wrote it。 (Doesn't this image, in particular, give an idea of the real nature of the passion-laden author?)Anyway, so-- it's basically a story of "Rough Natures Colliding with Each Other"。 The Earnshaw family is taken by surprise when the father brings home a differently complexioned baby orphan (-yes, the complexion plays a role- not exactly racist, but。。。yes, it does exist)。 This baby grows up as Heathcliff- the single name is all he has- and mingles with the other Earnshaw children, namely, the girl Catherine, who's already pretty fiery and bright。 But the other child, her brother, doesn't take a liking to Heathcliff。。。and this hatred sets their paths in anger。 Later on, they grow up, and Catherine and Heathcliff fall in love; but (-and here's the thing!) this love story is what most people covet the most here。 With dialogues like, "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same。。。。" and"My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning。。。" 。。。it's clear how intense the affair is。 What happens then? Their paths continue, but that is not where this story heads to; the heirs of this couple, and how they get mixed in with the Lintons (another household) forms the rest。 Yeah, maybe I don't make it clear as to how interesting it is, but my take is: just go for it。 The character of Catherine was one of the most tempestuous, yet the perfectly balanced one; this is a dialogue between her father and her: 'Why canst thou not always be a good lass, Cathy?' And she turned her face up to his, and laughed, and answered: 'Why cannot you always be a good man, father?' That was one of the most reverberating, lasting dialogues to flow in my mind。 Here's another, and, incidentally, it's also about the character of Heathcliff himself:"You needn't have touched me!"。。。。。。。。"I shall be as dirty as I please, and I like to be dirty, and I will be dirty"。 The way this novel is written too, admits of some genuine spark of creativity。 There is a narrator, who meets a woman, and THIS woman narrates the whole story of the novel, about Catherine and Heathcliff。 The first narrator is inconsequential, he doesn't do anything, except maybe, remind of John Watson。 Just loved it。 。。。more

How can any reader view WH as a passionate romance or Heathcliff as a romantic hero? This is the second time I’ve read this horror story and I like it no better than the first - in fact, I think I like it less。 In today’s terms, Heathcliff is a stalker, Linton a gaslighter, and both Cathys might as well be Kardashians。 How can I rate this book? I mean, it’s Emily Bronte, so 5 stars, right? No I admire the complex plot and characterization, but I hate every character and every scene。 I’m going to How can any reader view WH as a passionate romance or Heathcliff as a romantic hero?

I felt it only fair to re-read this book。 Read it YEARS ago for my English literature list (in English), but couldn't remember much of it。 And, since I wanted to cross this one off my 1001-list, I needed to re-read。 Finished it today and I must say, that it was a tough one。 Not because of the language this time: I got me a Dutch copy。 No, it was the book itself。I was more or less losing my way in the story。 Heathcliff, Cathy, their fathers, Catherine, Linton, Hareton, the tenant, Ellen。 They all I felt it only fair to re-read this book。 Read it YEARS ago for my English literature list (in English), but couldn't remember much of it。 And, since I wanted to cross this one off my 1001-list, I needed to re-read。 Finished it today and I must say, that it was a tough one。 Not because of the language this time: I got me a Dutch copy。 No, it was the book itself。I was more or less losing my way in the story。 Heathcliff, Cathy, their fathers, Catherine, Linton, Hareton, the tenant, Ellen。 They all do their dance of life and are very mixed up。 What I found shocking, is that marriage between cousin and niece is as normal as marrying a non-relative。 I can't imagine that they didn't know in these times? Or did they and was it just a matter of convenience / keeping the estate & the money (if there were any) better in the family? No, I do not like the main characters, apart from Hareton and Ellen maybe。 The men have all the power, Heathcliff is just an uncivilized ruffian and the women? Well, they have to do as the men say (bad enough), but then they act so dramatic: not eating, fainting, crying, being VERY mad。 No, not my kind of heroines。 I'm glad I don't have to meet one of them in real life。。。。 。。。more
